Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. According to available data, about half of the population has hemorrhoids by the age of 50. Hemorrhoids are also common among pregnant women. The pressure of the fetus in the abdomen, as well as hormonal changes, causes the hemorrhoidal vessels to enlarge. These vessels are also placed under severe pressure during childbirth. For most women, however, hemorrhoids caused by pregnancy are a temporary problem.
Hemorrhoids exist in two forms External of Internal. In the external form the hemorrhoid is located near the anus and feels like a hard lump. It is covered by skin and will bleed only when ruptured.
In the Internal form hemorrhoids are likely to bleed and protrude from the anus during bowel movements. It can also extend and cause significant pain.
It is always helpful to see a doctor if you suspect that you have hemorrhoids.
